Michael Tomison

Michael Derek Tomison of Alto NM and Levelland TX completed his spiritual journey with his last breath as he continued into eternity with Jesus.  Derek died as a result of complications of COVID Presbyterian Hospital in Ruidoso NM on October 5, 2021 at the age of 46. He was born on September 10, 1975 in Lubbock TX into a loving family.  His parents are Jacqi and De Tomison.

Along with his parents, his sister Manda Tomison all of Alto NM are left to share his memory and complete his dreams of his legacy for humanity. In addition to Jacqi, De, and Manda he is survived by uncles Randy (Jan) Tomison and Ron (Liz) Tomison, cousins Lance (Paula) Tomison and Ty (Kelly) Tomison, and numerous friends and colleagues.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents Martin Cuba, Angeline Cuba (Rudolph) Shockley, Melvin Sandlin Tomison and Madgie Loree Tomison.

Derek attended school and graduated from Levelland, graduated from South Plains College, graduated from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, in addition to studying in Junction Tx and in Central America.  He completed all schooling from K through university graduation with perfect attendance.

Derek was a boy scout completing numerous levels and badges, becoming an Eagle Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow.  He was a humble Christian from an early age, being a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church in Levelland.  He served as president of Methodist Men from 2007 - 2017.  He continued his community support through becoming an Elk at the Ruidoso Elks Lodge. Derek was an avid skier and became a snow ski instructor when he was 15 and worked on weekends and holidays at Ski Apache for 26 years as well as working with the race program on the mountain. Derek had a very long work history in the medical profession beginning by following Dr. V. Wiri as his mentor, into surgery at the hospital in Levelland while in high school.  He worked while attending college at United Blood Services as a lab technician, University Medical Center as a Health Unit Coordinator. Then upon graduation from Texas Tech University he worked for Lubbock County Medical Examiner as a Senior Autopsy Assistant, Texas Tech University Health Sciences as Research Technician in OB/GYN, Heart Transplant Devices, Artificial Blood, Research Assistant in Department of Pathology on numerous projects and Lab Management. Derek also worked at South Plains College in Levelland.

He is credited in several medical, abstracts and research publications.

He was part of the Radio Emergency Weather Team in Levelland and Hockley County Tx.  He studied and became licensed as a Certified Emergency Medical Technician. He also worked as an assistant to various law enforcement agencies.

He was a member of American MENSA, Methodist Men, Gideons, International Society of Heart and Lung Transportation, Charter Member SPC Math and Engineering Club, Charter Member of TTU Biology Club, and American Chemical Society.

Derek was a recipient of the Hugh O'Brien Award, Beta, Beta, Beta Biological Honorary Award Texas Tech University among other achievement awards.

His desire to help mankind led him to design and develop several medical inventions and establish and chair MDT Corporation for those medical devices.

His loyalty, commitment, and determination always included a big smile and compassion toward everyone and passion everything he ever did. Derek loved the outdoors, animals and especially the Yorkies that were part of his family.

A Memorial Celebration of Life will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Houston Street in Levelland TX on Saturday April 9th, 2022 at 2 pm with his requested barbeque dinner following at Fellowship Hall. (Wear a mask if you so desire.)  Derek's favorite color was green, so wear something green to the celebration if you would like.
