Marjorie Woodul-Hinkle

December 5, 1931 — October 2, 2021

Ruidoso, NM

Marjorie Woodul-Hinkle (Marge, Margie) died on October 2 in Ruidoso, NM. Born on December 5, 1931, in El Paso, TX, Marge was the daughter of Rose Mullen Abbott and Grover Abbott, one of six children. She was raised at the smelter in El Paso (where her father worked), and attended El Paso High School. In 1948, she married Dick Woodul, also of El Paso, and they had six children together. Until 1956, they lived in El Paso, and then moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico. In 1972, they took up residence in Ruidoso, which she always called “Paradise."

In Carlsbad, Marge was very active in Camp Fire Girls, becoming leader of a group that lasted from elementary school through high school. She attended Camp Fire summer camp every year, where her role was notable as “wrangler” for the horseback riding activities. She also volunteered at St. Francis Hospital and for the Red Cross. When the family moved to Ruidoso, and at the age of 41, Marge learned to ski, becoming an accomplished skier. Year after year, she drove her sons (and many other kids too) up to the ski area on school ski days. She loved the skiing scene and worked a couple seasons at Mountain Ski Shop. She also took up golf and enjoyed playing for some years. High on Ruidoso, Marge began to work at the Ruidoso Chamber of Commerce, which indirectly led to an interest in real estate. She studied for her license, and continued to work with local real estate agencies until she retired at age of 88 in 2020. Kids and dogs were big themes in her life, and she even featured her grandsons, Kyler and Grady, along with her dogs—first, Posey and later, Pancho—in her real estate ads.

Having been divorced in 1979, Marge married Rolla Hinkle II in 1998. They had met some years earlier, when Rolla landed his hot air balloon in a field behind her house in Ruidoso, starting an acquaintance that bloomed into a long-term relationship. A good match, Rolla fit right in with Marge’s enthusiasm, energy, and interests—and she, with his. Rolla and Marge both loved ballooning and all the activities and events connected to it. She said it was as much fun driving the chase vehicle as being in the balloon. They were also regularly sighted around Ruidoso, attending their grandchildren’s ball games, going to performances at Spencer Theater, participating in the Aspencade parade, and socializing everywhere. They were known for their generous contributions to the community and their upbeat, outgoing, and fun-loving personalities.

Marge was preceded in death by her loving husband of 23 years, Rolla, who passed away on January 19; her parents Rose Mullen and Grover Abbott; her siblings, Mary Gantner, Tom Abbott, Fred Abbott, Leo Abbott, and Vincent Abbott; her daughter Lucinda (Cindy), and her son-in-law Mark Treon. She’s survived by her children, Chris Woodul (Micah) of Ruidoso, New Mexico; Bill Woodul (Jeanne) of Folsom, California; Richard Woodul II of San Francisco, California; Jessica Treon of Waldport, Oregon; and Jennifer Woodul (Allison) of Napa, California; her sister-in-law, Constance Woodul of Costa Rica; Rolla’s two sons, Rolla R. Hinkle III and Madison M. Hinkle (Susan); nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

No services are planned, but the family will hold an open house honoring Marge and Rolla in Ruidoso on November 26, 2021, from 4-6 PM at the Alto Lakes Golf and Country Club. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Humane Society of Lincoln County. Cards can be directed to the Woodul family at 303 Coal Drive, Ruidoso, NM 88345.
