Francis Mckinney

October 9, 1935 — April 4, 2022

Ruidoso, NM

Frances Mae Peters McKinney, 86, a resident of Ruidoso, took flight to the stars on Monday April 4, 2022. Frances was born October 9, 1935, in Denver, Colorado. She lived in Roswell and Las Cruces before moving to Ruidoso in 1985. She graduated from Roswell High School and attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri.

Frances's passions were raising her 4 children, working as interior designer, endlessly remodeling her homes, traveling, and working in her gardens. She was a consummate businesswoman and gave much blood, sweat, and tears to operating and expanding the Pic Quik convenience stores in Las Cruces and other locations. She was a licensed interior designer all her adult life, serving on the New Mexico State Board of Interior Design. Her designs were unique and inspired and she spread her style throughout her network. She had a work ethic rarely seen in this world and worked circles around people much younger than she. She undoubtedly lived a life of purpose.

She was a great mentor, idol, and role model to many. However, when a design (or your behavior) did not meet her standards, she had a unique way of raising her eyebrows up to her hairline. Clearly signaling her disapproval. She had more class and dignity working in her yard and garden than most people exhibit in the board room. She had the ability to make everyone feel valued, a sense of humor that was loving yet bitingly sarcastic, but above all she was fun. If there is one word to describe Frances, it would be passionate.

Frances was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Laura Peters, her sister Anne, and her husbands….

Frances is survived by her sons Franklin (Jenni) of Tahoka, TX; Scot (Betsy) of Tijeras, NM; daughters Lauranne of Las Cruces, NM; and Jane of Dallas, Tx; 7 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren, and two great grandchildren scheduled to arrive soon; Sister Lauralea Marley-McCrea of Roswell; and Frances's adopted family Mark and Suzan Stambaugh along with their kids of Chicago, IL.

In addition, she was the matriarch to an extended network of family and friends throughout the country.

From those who loved and respected Frances, it may sound greedy to want more days with person who lived so long, but the fact that she was 86 does not diminish the enormity of the room whose doors have quietly shut. There are no words to express the loss we feel.
