Sherman Benedict Blake, Jr., was born on October 22, 1957 in Mescalero, New Mexico and passed on March 5, 2019 in Mescalero, New Mexico. Sherman is preceded in death by his parents Sherman G. Blake, Sr. and Mabel Naiche-Blake. He is survived by his children Clint Blake, Sherman Blake III and his grandson Santana Blake, which is his pride and joy. He is also survived by his siblings, Olinda Blake and Kathy Murphy and his brother Pascal Blake.
Sherman attended and graduated from St. John's Indian High School, Phoenix, Arizona. He served in the United States Marine Corps and was stationed at various locations to include Camp Pendleton, California; Camp Lejeune, North Carolina; Okinawa, Japan; Philippines, and Thailand. He attended New Mexico State University. Sherman was employed with various departments of the Mescalero Apache Tribe and his most recent employment was with the Mescalero Apache School where he taught Apache Language. As an Apache Medicine Man he sponsored many maidens and had a strong belief in our traditional ways. As a devoted Catholic and a member of the St. Joseph's Apache Mission Catholic Church he served in the lead role as the Director of the Choir and played his guitar. Sherman had a voice like no other.
He loved to sing and the power in his voice will never be forgotten. Sherman was the rock of our family and he continuously led us in prayer. He is dearly loved and will be greatly missed. Rosary Services will be held on Sunday-March 10, 2019 at 6:00pm and Funeral Services will be held on Monday-March 11, 2019 at 9:00am at St. Joseph's Apache Mission. Burial will follow at the Mescalero Cemetery.
