Shamus Mehaffie

December 12, 1932 — May 31, 2016

Shamus Mehaffie, 83, of Ruidoso passed away at home with his wife by his side on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 in Ruidoso. He was born December 12, 1932 in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from the University of North Texas with his BS and MA. In 1971, he graduated from the University of Texas with his PhD. He was a professor emeritus at Texas Tech University for over 25 years.

During the Korean War, he served in the Air Force for four years. While teaching at Kimball High School in Dallas, he met and married Virginia Barton (Pierce) on February 24, 1967. They moved to Ruidoso in 1989 from Lubbock. Shamus was a long-time member of Community United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; daughter, Megan Comiskey and her husband George of Lubbock; three grandchildren, Dominique, India and Brett. He was preceded in death by two brothers, L.H. Mehaffie, Jr. and Terry Mehaffie, Sr.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 9, at 10:00 AM at LaGrone Funeral Chapel in Ruidoso.
