Ramona Ortiz

March 20, 1918 — January 17, 2019

Ramona Guiles Ortiz passed away peacefully on January 17, 2019. In the days before, she spent many hours in hospice care in Albuquerque, visiting with her large family of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Ramona Guiles was born in Three Rivers, NM on March 20, 1918. She spent her early years there with her parents, Isabel and Dionicio Guiles, and her siblings John and Angela. They lived in Picacho, NM during her early years. Her sister Rebecca was born there, and the family moved to Carrizozo where Bill her youngest brother was born. In Carrizozo Ramona met her future husband Paul L. Ortiz, and they got married in 1937 and were together until his death in 2007. Ramona and Paul both worked hard to raise their growing family, all of whom they dearly loved.

They had six boys: Richard, Robert (DD), Tony, Fidel, Carl and James; six girls: Frances, Rita, Esther, the twins Elizabeth and Eloise, and Judy. All of them survive except Judy, who died in infancy. She is also survived by her loving sister Rebecca Uribe and her family from Dallas, TX. Ramona and Paul enjoyed 29 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren. She leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews and their families.

Ramona enjoyed an active life raising her family in Carrizozo. She was also busy with many activities involving church, school, and civic organizations. She helped her husband Paul establish their cafe business in the 1950's, and later belonged to the Santa Rita church choir and quilting group, which helped raise money for the church with their quilt raffles. She sewed for the church, clothes for her family, and for others in the community who needed something for a special occasion. She was a member of the Womens Club of Carrizozo, and helped in several of their projects. Generous with her time, she taught many others her skills as a seamstress and cake decorator. She made decorated cakes for local organizations as needed, sometimes for money, most times as a gift or donation. Making beautiful things out of her everyday surroundings was her favorite way of expressing herself. Up until her 100th year, she still enjoyed some sewing. She liked to help people, and made many friends from all walks of life.
