Starts at 1:00 pm
Neta Gill, 94, passed away peacefully on August 4, 2026, in Alto, New Mexico, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born on December 14, 1931, in Howard County, Texas, to Luther Leroy Underwood and Mabel Carter Underwood, Neta attended Texas Tech University before marrying the love of her life, Bill Gill, on July 16, 1950, in Big Spring, Texas. Following a honeymoon in Ruidoso, New Mexico, they began a remarkable marriage of more than 70 years built on faith, love, and devotion to family.
Neta's greatest joy was her family. A devoted homemaker, she lovingly cared for her husband and children while also working at times as a secretary and bookkeeper. An accomplished seamstress, she often spent early mornings sewing beautiful clothes for her daughters. She and Bill also enjoyed traveling with family and friends, creating memories that lasted a lifetime.
Her faith in Jesus Christ guided every aspect of her life. She faithfully served in her churches as a children's Sunday School and choir teacher, played the handbells, and sang in the choir. She and Bill also volunteered with Samaritan's Purse-Operation Christmas Child, served in the Welcome Center and Library at First Baptist Church Ruidoso, and volunteered at the Spencer Theater. From 2006 to 2014, Neta served as a trustee for LifeWay Christian Resources in Nashville, Tennessee.
Neta is survived by her children: David Gill and his wife, Sue, of Knoxville, Tennessee; Nancy Fezler and her husband, Steven, of North Augusta, South Carolina; and Susan Hibbs and her husband, Johnny, of El Paso, Texas. She was a proud grandmother to Jennifer & Steve Hales, Melissa & Hamel Patel, Taylor & Ty Kvasager, Cammie Marin, Cassie & Chris Ballantine, Laurelyn & Michael Morrison, Leah & Jon Charleson, Lindsay & Ray Schroer, and Austin & Shea Hibbs, and a cherished great-grandmother to fourteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Gill, and by her parents, Luther Leroy Underwood and Mabel Carter Underwood.
Neta will be remembered for her gentle spirit, quiet strength, unwavering faith, servant’s heart and love she freely gave. She had a remarkable ability to make everyone feel welcomed, valued, and loved. She reflected Christ's love in both simple and extraordinary ways. Her life was a beautiful example of humility, grace, and selfless service.
Neta will be laid to rest beside Bill at Fort Stanton State Veterans Cemetery.
A memorial service will be held at First Baptist Church, Ruidoso, New Mexico, on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. with a reception to follow at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Samaritan's Purse – Operation Christmas Child, a ministry that held a special place in Neta's heart.
