Ladell Flanagan

August 30, 1930 — October 17, 2014

LaDell Flanaga, a longtime resident of Ruidoso passed away Friday, October 17, 2014 in Phoenix, AZ at the age of 84. She was born August 30, 1930 in Earth, Texas to B.J. Black and Beulah Jeffries Black. She married H.B. Flanagan on May 14, 1949 in Amherst, Texas.

LaDell was a very devoted and loving wife and mother. She graduated from nursing school in 1948 and worked for various doctors in Muleshoe, TX. She also worked at the hospital in Muleshoe, where she was a surgical nurse. She was in great demand by the doctors, who often commented she knew her way around the operating room better then anyone. After moving to Ruidoso, she worked at the RuidosoHondo Valley General Hospital, at that time in the early 1960s the hospital had 6 beds. She gave up her nursing career to raise her family. She was very involved in her childrens activities in school, volunteering to help in any projects and events. In 1963 at the urging of then Scoutmaster, Mr. Johnson, she became the only Den Mother for Cub Scouts in the Ruidoso area. She hosted Cub Scout meetings at her home for all the Cub Scouts in the area until more Dens could be organized. She especially loved younger children and taught Sunday School for the 6,7, 8 year old at First Baptist Church in Ruidoso where in 1993 she was presented a plaque for her many years of devoted service.

After her husband died in 1986, she went to work a the brand new Walmart Store at the original location which is now Big 5, she retired from there after 10 years of service. Many Ruidosoans will remember seeing her there, where she started at a door greeter, then to ladies wear and the fabric department.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 37 years, sisters, LaVerne James and LaVonne Ward, her adopted son, Jim Parker and a nephew.

She is survived by her children, LaQuita Faust of El Mirage, AZ and Rod Flanagan of Ruidoso brothers, Gayland Smokey Black of Hobbs, NM and Thomas Black of Pampa, TX 2 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and adopted son, Stan Parker and many nieces and nephews.
