James Matthew Gonzales, an avid outdoorsman, left this world on March 1, 2026, at the age of 35. Born on November 29, 1990, James embraced life with an enthusiasm that was evident in all he did. A native of an area where nature abounds, he found joy in activities such as hunting, fishing, and riding horses. His love for the outdoors was not only a passion but also a way of life, one that he shared with his family and friends.

James had a unique charm, often surprising those around him with his penchant for acquiring unnecessary animals, a reflection of his generous spirit and playful nature. His interests extended beyond just the wild; he was equally proficient in welding and cutting wood, merging his practical skills with his love for the land.

Among his proudest accomplishments, James cherished his role as a great father, uncle, son, and brother. His commitment to family was evident in every aspect of his life, making him a deeply beloved figure among those fortunate enough to know him.

His legacy will continue to inspire those who shared in his love for the great outdoors and who appreciate the deep connections he fostered with family and friends. James Matthew Gonzales will be remembered for the profound impact he had on the lives of his loved ones.

James is survived by his loving wife, Hope Gonzales; sons, Giovanni Gutierrez, and Freddrick Botella Jr.; daughters, Kelena Gonzales, Baileigh Gonzales, Emma Lenna Spitty, and Poppy Gonzales; mother, Cecelia Valdez; father, Frankie Gonzales; godchildren, Hayden Hiles, and Hayleigh Hiles; grandmother, Mildred Gonzales; brothers, Jerome Gonzales, and Jonas "Koda" Lester; niece, River Gonzales; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. He is preceded in death by Rosarita Ann Smith, Santiago Valdez, Frank Gonzales, Thomas Martinez, Gerrick Morin, Adrian Sanchez, Francis "Babe" Rocha, Paul Valdez, Francis Gonzales, Anthony Gonzales, Charlie Apache, and Daniel Tissnolthos. 

Visitation will be held on Monday, March 9, 2026, from 5:00 PM until 6:30 PM at LaGrone Funeral Chapel of Ruidoso. The procession will leave at 6:30 PM for 109 Appaloosa Dr. in Mescalero where a wake will be held until 9:00 AM Tuesday. Interment will follow at Valdez Cemetery.
