Iva grew up on the Mescalero Apache Reservation. She attended school here until she left for High School where she attended the Albuquerque Indian School. Yes, your Grandmother was an awesome cheerleader! She graduated from AIS in 1959. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and homemaking. Her talent included sewing various styles of dresses from Wedding attire, Prom Dresses,Fiesta style dresses and clothing.
After graduation, she worked for the BIA Branch of Forestry as an Administrative Assistant. Iva attended Phoenix College in Arizona and began a career with the Indian Health Service at the Mescalero Indian Hospital as a Medical Records Technician and retired after 40 years of dedicated service.
Iva took over the responsibility of being a Head Cook for numerous Mescalero Apache Maidens during their Ceremonial Celebrations. She was self -taught in making teepees, Apache style camp dresses, Indian shirts, moccasins, shawls and enjoyed occasional beading. You would always see her at the ceremonials very supportive and happy to serve the people. At this time, we would like for all the Apache Maidens she served as a Head Cook to please stand....(thank you).
Her family was her greatest pride and priority. Every event was joyful and had plenty of food and fun for all the kids. She loved camping, fishing, horseback riding, playing Mexican cards, traveling to see family in Alaska Oklahoma, Arizona and South Dakota. She attended many sports events as a Huge Fan to all her Children and Grandchildren. She was so proud of all their accomplishments. She had nicknames for them all.
Iva had a very compassionate heart. She opened her door to many foster children and cared for them like her own children. She cared for all the family's friends and knew them as her own loved ones. This great love was nourished by her relationship with the Lord. She was always in attendance in church services and revivals in the community and the surrounding areas. She admired Inspirational and Praise and Worship Music. She was a strong avid Prayer Warrior. She never turned anyone away that had a prayer request. She had great faith in her time with the Lord. In Iva's last seconds of life, she was confident that she would be going from Glory to Glory. She is now with her loved ones that have gone before and will be a beautiful memory to us all as our Angel praying for us and a heart that will cry out for the Apache people. Her message to us all would be to Love one another no matter what and to take care of each other and ALWAYS PRAY.
