Hugh Fox

October 2, 1936 — August 9, 2016

Hugh R. Fox died on August 9 (2016) after a long illness. He was born on October 2, 1936, in Newark, New Jersey, son of Herman Rottmann Fox and Erma Lillian Rist. He attended schools there and then in Hanover, New Hampshire, graduating from Hanover High School in 1954. He was graduated from Dartmouth College ('58) where he majored in History, from the Army Language School in Vietnamese (graduated/discharged in 1963), and then graduated from Rutgers' Law School with a JD. In 1965, Hugh married Linda E. Schriever, daughter of Jack R. Schriever and Edna Neumann Schriever of Lyme, New Hampshire. Hugh was admitted to the New Hampshire Bar in 1966. He and Linda lived in Bradford, Vermont, where Hugh opened a law-publishing firm and Linda opened a library for the Bradford Elementary School. Their farm in Bradford was a shared delight as was their involvement in community activities and many friendships. In 1980 they moved to Canandaigua New York, where Hugh taught as Professor at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) School of Printing. He and Linda also had an antique business (as his parents had done since the 1930s), doing many area Shows and running a shop in Cheshire. Hugh took the family down east for many summers to the New Harbor area on Pemaquid Peninsula in Maine. In 1996 he and Linda purchased an adobe home in Lincoln, New Mexico, and moved there permanently in 1997, after Hugh retired from RIT. He and Linda developed several displays inside the Tunstall Store for the Lincoln State Monument (now Lincoln Historic Site) in Lincoln, and made extensive donations of antiques to the Monument, The Hubbard Museum of the American West, and to Fort Concho in San Angelo, Texas. Hugh was an serious and careful researcher working on several projects dealing with the French and Indian War, Naval battles on the Great Lakes, California's early Spanish and Russian History, the Fur Trade, and New Netherlands. He is survived by Linda, his wife of 51 years, his two sisters (Ruth Janet Fox Hicks of Stone Harbor New Jersey, Nancy Lou Fox Stenstrom of Walterboro, South Carolina); a sister-in-law (Karen Ann Schriever Laudon of Ste. Maxime, France); 9 nieces and nephews; four good and true children: Benjamin (and daughter-in-law Dr. Kristin Morris Fox, in Esperance, New York.), Carolin (and partner Kevin McClintock, in Troy, Michigan), Ruth (in Portland Oregon), and Sam (and partner Erin Drake, in Denver, Colorado), and 3 excellent grandsons Max, Jed and Oliver. He and Linda were the love of each other's lives from the moment they met on Christmas Day, 1964, always with passion and support for each other, and never running out of ideas to discuss or of moments in their shared life to remember. He was a thorough-thinking man constantly seeking knowledge of new topics while pairing a sense of humor and his imagination with pride in all the accomplishments of his family, near and far. All of the above is, he would say, the "Story of My Life".
