Hood, Charles Stewart, aged 84, passed away peacefully on Thursday May 2nd, 2019 in Roswell, NM.
A memorial service will be held 10am Tuesday June 4th, 2019 at LaGrone Funeral Chapel of Ruidoso.
Stewart was born in South Gate CA, on September 4th, 1934 to Evelyn Lois Hood and Wilbur Richmond Hood and moved to Phoenix, AZ as a young child. Stewart married Johanne Anita Dexter and they lived in Phoenix where they raised their three sons Doug, Don, and Dennis. After his divorce from Johanne he met and married Jean McCaskill in 1978 and in 2005 they moved to Alto, NM.
In Phoenix, Stewart managed the local 7-UP bottling plant owned by his father. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and the family spent many weekends camping or at the family cabin in Pinetop, AZ. Photography was his favorite hobby and he would spend many hours in his dark room developing photographs from the family trips and events. Stewart served in the Army Reserve and was also very active with The Thunderbirds, a Phoenix charitable foundation.
When Stewart and Jean moved to Alto, NM in 2005 they were quick to make friends and embrace the local community. They were both instrumental in forming the new HOA board for Rancho Ruidoso Valley Estates in 2005 and Stewart served as President for many years. Stewart and Jean were very active in the local Catholic church and attended St. Eleanor Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Catholic Church. As well as attending service, Stewart worked the sound system while Jean sang in the choir. They also volunteered many hours at the San Patricio Retreat doing grounds keeping and working in the kitchen. Stewart and Jean were loving constant companions in life until her death in February of 2019.
Stewart was a low key person with a dry sense of humor and enjoyed being funny around people. He enjoyed details and figuring out how things worked. Some of his favorite activities were exploring the back roads around Alto, photography, and building doll houses. He was loyal to his friends, family, and generous with his time and efforts to the community and Church. He loved his family, his neighbors, and the many friends that he and Jean got to know in Alto.
Stewart is survived by his sister Marilyn; his son Douglas Hood and wife Debra of Tucson, AZ; his son Donald Hood and wife Trish of Cave Creek, AZ; his son Dennis Hood and wife Linda of Flower Mound, TX; his step-daughter Carson Apps of Salida, CO; his 6 grand children and 2 great grand children.
In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to the San Patricio Retreat where Stewart gave so much of his time. For more information visit: http://www.sanpatricioretreat.org/what-we-do
