Carol Ann Evans died at the age of 63 on January 16, 2019 in Ruidoso, New Mexico. She was born on October 11,1955 in Fort Rucker, Alabama to Army (Ret.) Lt. Col. Thomas Leon Payne and Alice Nell Powell, a career schoolteacher. Her childhood was filled with travel experiences as the daughter of an Army pilot including living in Germany and Holland. Carol studied Animal Science at Texas A&M University and then graduated from Texas Tech University in 1979 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting.
Throughout her life Carol traveled to and lived in many places. She visited six of the seven continents, only missing Antarctica. One of her favorite places to live was O'ahu, Hawai'i, where she taught an adult comprehensive basics class. A piece of her heart was always in the Aloha State. She raised two incredible children; one who went on to become a diplomat and the other an accomplished photographer/journalist. She was a force to be reckoned with when it came to her children's well-being and was unconditionally encouraging of their endeavors.
Carol loved to create things, and pursued various interests in cooking, gardening, sewing, and photography. She passed her love for animals on to her daughter and owned many pets in her lifetime. She loved them all, but her beloved Charlie stole her heart. She also had a huge love of music.
She is survived by her son Brad, his wife and their three children; her daughter Heather Evans and husband Jeff Gibson; her parents Tom and Alice Payne; her brother Richard Payne and wife Tracy; several nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and grand-nephews.
Cremation services were performed by LaGrone Funeral Chapel in Ruidoso, NM. Carol requested no services but asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Spina Bifida Association (SBA) or to the Ruidoso Hospice Foundation
(https://www.ruidosohospicefoundation.orR), which helped bring her comfort at the end of her life. SBA donations can be made in her name for her daughter by going to http://spinabifidaassociation.org.
