I served in the Army.

Manuel (Mannie) R. Hernandez, 69, went to be with the Lord on Friday, Dec. 1. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family. Mannie was born on Sept. 6, 1948, in Carrizozo, New Mexico, to Albert and Ysabel Hernandez. He grew up in Carrizozo with two brothers and two sisters. Mannie graduated from Carrizozo High School in 1967. After high school, he attended Durham Tech. He was then drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Conflict where he served in Germany as a Supply Specialist. After returning from his service and throughout his lifetime, Mannie held various jobs such as butcher, carpenter, welder, caretaker, and water operator. In 2010, he retired from Alto Lakes Water and Sanitation District. Mannie served 16 years as Mayor of the Town of Carrizozo; some of his accomplishments included building of the Detention Center and new City Hall, improving numerous streets and the railroad crossing, and creating the Veteran’s Park.

Mannie married Mary Schlarb on Mar. 11, 1972. They made their home in Carrizozo, New Mexico, where they raised their two daughters. Mannie and Mary enjoyed a loving and devoted marriage for over 45 years.

Mannie is preceded in death by his father and paternal and maternal grandparents. Surviving Mannie is his wife Mary, daughters Yvette (Ami), Lynette (Mark), granddaughter Riley, mother Ysabel, siblings Albert (Bennie), Mary, Yolanda (Robert) and Ray.

Mannie enjoyed creating art in various forms; listening to music; collecting antiques; tending to his animals; and watching car shows, westerns, and football. However, he most enjoyed spending time with the sunshine of his life, granddaughter Riley. He will be fondly remembered for his youthful sense of humor and as a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Mannie will be missed by his family, friends and community.

Prayer service will be Wednesday, December 6, at 9:30 AM with the funeral mass to follow at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow at the Evergreen Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Fallen Firefighter Memorial c/o Smokey Bear’s Hometown Association PO. Box 223, Capitan, NM 88316.

  2. The Dorer Family
    Ruidoso, NM

We send our deepest condolences to the Family and Friends. We all look forward to when the promises found it the Bible come true, like the one found in Isaiah 33:24 where no resident will say: I am sick. We also look forward to death being brought to nothing. - 1 Corinthians 15:26. Our Heavenly Father doesnt want us to die and suffer. Revelation 21:4 tells us that He will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away.

Mr. Hernandez welcomed me into his home as a guest and made me feel part of the family over the years. This man could fill up a room with his gregarious, playful nature and I remember every occasion that I was in his company fondly. His memory will always be in my heart. Thank you for sharing your dad with me Yvette. My prayers and love to the entire family. May God welcome him into Heaven and watch over his loved ones in this time of sorrow.
